A preliminary post-mortem report has suggested that television actress Disha Ganguly, who was found dead in her Behala home on Thursday morning, had committed suicide.

Police said the 23-year-old had died around two hours after she had dinner at her friend's Beleghata home on Wednesday night. The friend, an actor, and Disha had reportedly been planning to marry.

"The preliminary post-mortem report suggests that the actress had committed suicide. Time of death is two hours from her dinner at 11.15pm," joint commissioner (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh said on Friday.

The last time Disha spoke over the phone was around 1am, minutes before the time of death as indicated by the preliminary post-mortem report.

Sleuths said the actor friend, who had dropped her home, had called to inform her that he had reached home.

"The male friend told us he did not find anything unusual while he spoke to Disha over the phone the last time. The next morning when he called her, she did not reply. He suspected something amiss and went to check on her," said an investigator.

The friend told the police that he had broken the door of Disha's flat in Udayan Apartment on Banamali Naskar Road and found her hanging by a dupatta.

Forensic experts visited the flat on Friday and collected samples to find out whether the door had been broken open.

Disha's parents, who were in Nairobi, returned to Calcutta on Friday morning. "Her parents have not lodged any complaint. Her father has said he does not blame anyone for Disha's death," joint commissioner Ghosh said.

Sources privy to the probe said Disha, who was acting in Star Jalsha mega serial Tumi Ashbe Bole, had a fallout a few weeks ago with another television actress, who had lived at the Behala apartment for a couple of months.

Officers said the actress had recently suffered injuries after falling from a height and was currently hospitalised.
