Path lab for animals

A pathological laboratory has opened at Baguiati that would not only conduct USGs and X-rays for pets but also bring the machines to your home and do the needful if the patient is unable to travel.  Animal Health Pathalogy Lab & Diagnostic Centre officially started these services on Akshay Tritiya on Monday. “Actually there were some emergency cases last week so we were forced to start the USG (ultrasonography) tests a few days earlier,” confessed Pratip Chakraborty, who has started the centre along with brother Parikshit. They also run the  Care N Cure pet shop nearby.

Pathological labs for animals are rare in the city and pet-owners have to travel long distances to get the tests done. “The government vet college cum hospital in Belgachhia has these facilities but they are not accessible to private cases. And USG and x-rays for animals are done only in two private labs in the city, both far from the Salt Lake-New Town region,” said Dr Krishanu Ghosh, a vet who has many patients in this part of town.

Ghosh says he usually prescribes around one blood test a day, to check cholesterol, glucose, liver function etc, and a USG and an x-ray once a week. “USGs are mostly needed for pregnancy cases and x-rays in case of injuries,” he said.

“In SOS situations, pet owners try to coax human path labs into doing their tests but their staff is not trained to extract blood from ailing animals and since the calibrations aren’t designed for animals, the tests reveal inaccurate results,” said Chakraborty.
