Malda, Jan. 1: Two colleges in Malda will not hold student union elections following allegations and counter-allegations of violence.
While the SFI has decided not to contest the Gour College election, the Chhatra Parishad has decided the same at the SFI-dominated Malda College.
The election to the Malda College student union is scheduled for January 11, while that to Gour College located in Old Malda is supposed to be held on January 7.
Both the student bodies have earlier won uncontested in the two colleges. Yesterday was the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers in Malda College, which has 64 seats. However, the Chhatra Parishad did not file a single nomination for the elections.
District secretary of the SFI Joy Chakraborty said they had won all the seats uncontested. The elections were scheduled for January 11.
The district president of the Chhatra Parishad, Madhumay Sarkar, alleged that the Malda College authorities had not informed them in advance about the election date. As a result, they did not collect nomination forms in protest.
“We have brought the matter to the notice of the subdivisional officer in writing. We could have started movement over the issue, but that would have created law and order problem,” Sarkar claimed.
Sarkar alleged that the SFI had created a reign of terror on the Malda College campus in the past few years. The outfit, with patronage of the college authorities, did not allow any other student body to contest the election, he said.
Chakraborty, however, denied the charges. He said the Chhatra Parishad had no contact with the students in the college and failed to field any candidate.
District president of the SFI Animesh Saha accused the Chhatra Parishad of terrorising the students of Gour College and preventing their candidates from filing nominations.
The college authorities and the administration had failed to respond to their call to restore normality in Gour College. “In protest, we have decided to boycott the vote,” he said. Gour College has 27 seats.
