With 800 direct participants and contestants from 120 schools and colleges of Calcutta, Crescendo is the largest music competition for youngsters in the city and beyond. It promises to be a harmonious blend of different genres such as Western Classical, Contemporary, Indian Classical, Rock and Popular music.
Hosted by The Calcutta School of Music (CSM), Crescendo VII 2016 will be presented by Complan and partnered by The Telegraph. Participants will get an opportunity to showcase their talent in categories such as Western Vocals, Piano, Violin, Classical Guitar, Western Band and Indian Vocals.
The Rock Guitar category is making its debut this year. The performers will be judged in the final by a panel that will include blues singer Anjum Katyal and Meeryung Hall, a classically trained singer and the wife of US consul-general Craig L. Hall.
Last year, the winner in the Classical Guitar category was 14-year-old Atmadeep R. Pradhan from Gajol, Malda. Atmadeep received a full scholarship from CSM for his performance. This year too, the school plans to award a full scholarship to a deserving student if they spot one at the musical extravaganza.
Schedule: The prelims will take place at CSM, 6B Sunny Park, on July 1 for Western Vocals, July 4 for Piano, July 5 for Violin, July 7 for Classical Guitar, July 8 for Rock Guitar, July 11 for Western Band and July 12 for Indian Vocals. The finals will take place on July 23 at ICCR.
Registration: Open till June 30, 5.30pm. Registration fee for each category is Rs 200 per head.
Organiserspeak: "Crescendo started in 2010 and this will be our seventh edition. Over the years, the competition has grown to become the biggest musical platform for school and college students. Young people enjoy participating in Crescendo because they meet fellow musicians from other institutions and are motivated by the high standard of the performances. We also try to incentivise the students by giving out attractive prizes," said Dickoo Nowroji, the president of CSM.
