Krishnagar, Oct. 3: Minister Ujjwal Biswas’s son died in a private Calcutta hospital this afternoon, three days after he allegedly set himself on fire.

Sayan had suffered over 85 per cent burns when he allegedly poured petrol and set himself ablaze on Saturday after an altercation with his father over the youth’s relationship with a girl.

The minister’s hands were also scalded while trying to save his 22-year-old son at their Krishnagar home.

The power engineering student was on life-support system for the past couple of days and died at 1.40pm today. The state horticulture minister was at the hospital then.

A number of Trinamul leaders from Nadia and Calcutta, including MPs Mukul Roy and Subrata Bakshi and Tapas Roy, and MLAs Pundarikakshya Saha and Kallol Khan, were also present.

The body was taken to NRS Hospital in the evening for post-mortem.

Pundarikakshya Saha said: “After the post-mortem, the body will be taken to Krishnagar. The last rites will be performed at the Nabadwip funeral ghat on the banks of the Ganga.”

Senior leaders like Mukul Roy will be part of the congregation that will accompany the body to Nabadwip, said Khan.

Trinamul leaders at the hospital were seen comforting Ujjwal Biswas, who was crying inconsolably.

Leaders from the district remained tight-lipped about Sayan’s relationship, which probably could have driven him to attempt suicide. “We can’t confirm the reason behind the suicide attempt yet,” an officer said.
