April 19: Thirty-eight eggs sent for lab tests after a Calcutta homemaker complained that she had been sold plastic eggs have revealed nothing abnormal after 22 tests, a senior government official said today.

The West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences carried out a physical examination of the eggs besides testing the quality of the egg yolk, albumin, molecular weight of albumin, fatty acid estimation, and total protein and quantification of albumin, sources said.

DNA tests were also carried out to identify the origin of the eggs and the results showed all to be chicken eggs.

"All the tests confirmed that there was nothing unusual about the eggs. Sensory evaluation was carried out on fried and boiled eggs. The results were normal," an official said.

Anita Kumar, 36, of Tiljala had filed a complaint with Karaya police station that the moment she put some eggs on a frying pan, there was a pungent smell. The albumin resembled burnt plastic, the complaint added. Based on her complaint, Shamim Ansari, a trader in Park Circus, was arrested.

The Calcutta Municipal Corporation had sent 10 eggs from Anita's stock along with some randomly collected ones to the animal resources development department for tests.
