Rare pictures of over 400 mammals, detailed information about them, maps, diagrams and contact numbers of conservationists make up Vivek Menon’s Indian Mammals — A Field Guide (Hachette India, Rs 850).

The book was launched on Wednesday at Taj Bengal in the presence of wildlife enthusiasts like actor-author Jayant Kripalani, filmmaker Gautam Ghose, actor Sabyasachi Chakrabarty and Ashish Ghosh, a former director of the Zoological Survey of India.

A wildlife conservationist, author of eight books, photographer and founder and executive director of Wildlife Trust of India, Menon’s specialisation is birds. So why a book on mammals?

“We are mammals, so we should know more about our kith and kin. I wanted to write on elephants. But research revealed that there has not been a comprehensive book on mammals since 1950. I wanted to cover all the existing mammals. In that sense this book is a celebration of life,” he said.

British deputy high commissioner Scott Furssedonn-Wood, who unveiled the book, said he was struck by India’s natural beauty. “A large number of mammals found here have transcended boundaries and become global icons. The creatures in the book are not just national treasures but that of the entire world,” he said.

The question of poaching came up and Furssedonn-Wood pointed out how rhino horn powder was in high demand at nightclubs all over the world.

Sabyasachi Chakrabarty talked about his passion for nature and wildlife photography. “It is time everyone takes a little initiative to help out NGOs and the authorities concerned with conservation. Conservation is related to our survival,” he said.

The launch was followed by a discussion on the cultural significance of Indian wildlife.

“Where does religion come in when we are talking about animals,” wondered Jayant Kripalani. He said he used to be “terrified of animals” but now is scared for them.
