The hurdle that threatened to trip the BBD Bag-Joka Metro Railway project has been removed, with the transport department on Tuesday agreeing to allow work in 24 hours on two stretches with tram tracks.

“Work on the Joka-Behala Bazar and Mominpur-Kidderpore stretches will resume tomorrow,” the minister of state for railways, Mukul Roy, said on Tuesday. Mamata Banerjee had on Sunday asked Roy and state transport minister Subrata Bakshi to end the impasse at the earliest.

A transport department source said the approval would result in the suspension of the Joka-Taratala tram service till work on the Metro link continued.

On December 23, the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government had said work on the two stretches could be allowed only if Metro paid a “hefty” compensation for the prolonged disruption in the tram service.
