The Bengal government restored Internet in Howrah district and Canning and Baruipur subdivisions of South 24-Parganas on Thursday evening.

The government had banned Internet nearly four days ago in the wake of agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Although Internet had been restored in Malda early on Tuesday, sources said the government had re-imposed the ban later on Thursday evening for an additional 24 hours.

Other areas that continue to be deprived of Internet as of Thursday evening are North Dinajpur, Murshidabad, and the Barasat and Basirhat sub-divisions.

Officials said the decision on restoring Internet to those areas would be taken only after reports from district police reached Calcutta.

Sources said residents of areas where Internet was still blocked faced cash shortages, in addition to inconveniences in daily transactions at banks and markets.

“These days, banks and post offices rely on Internet. Moreover, a lot of people have downloaded payment apps. So, net ban has taken a toll on the local economy,” said a resident of Basirhat.
