Trinamul Congress MP and actor Deepak Adhikari, popularly known as Dev in Tollywood, said on Tuesday that he knew no one by the name of Muhammad Enamul Haque, one of the prime accused in the multi-crore cattle smuggling case that the CBI has been investigating.

“I neither know anyone by the name of Enamul Haque nor have I received any gifts from him,” Dev said after stepping out of the CBI office in Calcutta.

“The officers wanted to record my statement and I have told them I will continue to cooperate with them.”

The CBI, which has been probing into the alleged cattle smuggling case in Bengal since 2018, had summoned the Trinamul MP on Tuesday after it had apparently emerged that Dev had allegedly received valuable gifts from Enamul.

CBI officials claimed three cattle traders from Bengal -- Enamul Haque, Anarul Sheikh and Muhammad Gulam Mustafa — were the prime suspects.

Haque was arrested in Delhi in November 2020 and the Supreme Court granted him bail in January.

The central investigating agency, which has already questioned nearly a dozen police officers in connection with this case, apart from several BSF officials, had summoned Anubrata Mondal, the president of the Trinamul's Birbhum district, for questioning in this case on Monday. Mondal didn’t turn up citing illness.

The officers said they wanted to know if Dev had any financial transaction ever with Enamul and whether he had ever held a meeting with the latter.

“I can't talk much about what transpired during the questioning session. I believe I will not have to appear again,” Dev said.
