A.R. Rahman is back. To where it had all started 10 years ago. Then, it was The Telegraph Unity of Light Concert. Now, it is the Celkon RahmanIshq. Both at the Salt Lake Stadium. As the city prepares to salute the musical genius of our times, Metro brings you up to speed.
What: Celkon RahmanIshq, conceptualised by Techfront and Rapport Global Events and partnered by The Telegraph.
Where: Salt Lake Stadium.
When: 7pm on Tuesday.
What does Rahman have to say about Calcutta? “The whole experience of being in Calcutta was completely overwhelming for us [in 2003]. The energy and love you guys showed me overwhelmed us.... It’s always fantastic coming back to Calcutta,” he told The Telegraph in the run-up to the concert. “I think Calcutta has a great audience. So, whenever you think about certain places which give you a positive energy, this is certainly among the best,” he added, soon after checking into the Hyatt Regency on Saturday evening.
What songs must you be ready to sing along to?
● Dil se ● Taal se taal ● Rut aa gayi re ● Tum tak● Jo bhi main ● Mayya ● Tere bina ● Piya milenge ● Jaane tu ● Ishq bina ● Rehna tu ● Yeh jo des ● Katiyan karoon ● Jashn-e-bahara ● Nazar laaye ● Jiya re jiya ● Chitti ● Mustafa ● Chaiyya chaiyya ● Tu mun shudi ● Jagao mere des ko ● Vande Mataram
Who will share the stage with ARR? A combination of Bollywood biggies and newbies — Sukhwinder Singh, Javed Ali, Shweta Pandit, Harshdeep Kaur, Neeti Mohan, Hriday Gattani, Suchi and others.
They will all be singing Rahman’s compositions, but which film music composer is the maestro hooked to? John Williams is an influence, he said. And then Ennio Morricone and his son Andrea Morricone. Sometimes, he listens to Marathi music, like Hridaynath Mangeshkar...
Talking of Mangeshkar, the “Mozart of Madras” admits... That he is nervous when working with legends like Lata Mangeshkar, SPB (S.P. Balasubrahmanyam), Yesudas or Asha Bhosle...
The legends named by Rahman won’t be there at the stadium on Tuesday, but in case you still haven’t booked a seat... All you have to do is visit indianstage.in and book your ticket. Tickets are also available at The Mobile Store outlets, Priya Cinema, Bioscope, Allure and The Telegraph One Stop Classifieds counters. Or you can target gate No. 4 at the Salt Lake Stadium.
Please don’t carry... Cameras, cigarettes, liquor, lighters, outside food and water.
Don’t forget your mobile phone... To capture some precious moments. While on mobiles, Rahman launched the AR45 by Celkon on Monday to mark the RahmanIshq four-city concert series. “A few days back, I was discussing the rising dollar with a friend. And he said we are buying many things from abroad. We actually need to support Indian products,” said Rahman about AR 45, which has been designed in India.
For more of the maestro... Download a special app and find out the A to Z about AR. Just scan the barcode on your ticket or visit www.followon.in/app. Before downloading, choose your preference — Android or Apple. At the stadium turn on the Wi-Fi service on your mobile and then… well, you have to wait for a surprise!
And what surprise will you be hoping for? That the weatherman is right! The weather forecast says the morning will not show the day — gloomy and wet to begin with, but brighter and drier thereafter. So, fingers crossed for the rain gods to spare The Rockstar’s grand show.
