A wagon of a goods train bound for New Jalpaiguri derailed between Sudhani and Barsoi stations in the Katihar district of Bihar on Thursday night.

In the past three months, this is the third incident of derailment reported under the Katihar division of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). The latest derailment affected the movement of trains between New Jalpaiguri and Baroi stations as it occurred on the principal route that connects north Bengal and the Northeast with the rest of the country.

Sources said while the train was moving through Katihar district, four wheels of the wagon derailed around 9.20pm.

“Because of the derailment of one of the wagons of a goods train near Sudhani station, train operations between NJP and Barsoi were affected. Senior railway officials of Katihar division reached the site and monitored the track restoration works,” said an official of the NFR, which has its headquarters at Maligaon in Assam.

Because of the derailment, some passenger trains which were running in the railway section concerned were halted at different stations.

“The movement of trains has normalised by the morning. An inquiry has been initiated,” said a source.
