Robbed by cabbie
Anupam Das, an employee of a private firm, was robbed of his valuables allegedly by a taxi driver and his aide while he was going home early on Saturday in Patuli. Das mentioned in his police complaint that the driver stopped the taxi when it reached Patuli around 1am. The driver allegedly pointed a gun at him, while the man sitting beside him apparently held a knife on his neck. "The two snatched my two cell phones, gold ring and wallet. They dragged me out of the vehicle before speeding away," the complaint said.
Accident
A 46-year-old woman died after the auto she was travelling in was hit by a bus on Ultadanga Main Road around 3.15pm on Sunday. Police said Basanti Roy was a resident of Bongaon in North 24-Parganas.
Poet dead
Poet Utpal Kumar Basu died on Saturday in Calcutta. He was 76. Basu had received many awards, including Ananda Purashkar, Shahitya Akademi award and Rabindra Puraskar. His first collection of poems - Chaitrye Rochito Kobita - was published in 1956. A geologist by training, Basu was briefly involved with the "hungry generation" literary movement. Artist Jogen Chowdhury, who was a friend of Basu since 1960, said: "Utpal was a great but self-effacing poet."
