Dancers’ Guild in EC block celebrated the birth anniversary of the late dancer Ranjabati Sircar by organising a dance show by its students.
The institute was founded in 1983 by Ranjabati’s mother Manjusri Chaki-Sircar and has evolved Navanritya, an expressive contemporary dance style that combines elements of martial arts, Mayurbhanj chhau, Bharatanatyam, thang-ta warrior dance of Manipur, Kandyan dance of Sri Lanka (originated in Kandy area) and much more.
Students showcased their talents by performing in various styles. Choreographer Jonaki Sarkar, who had trained under Sircar, said: “I joined this institute in 1986. One requires seven to 10 years to attain the status of a senior dancer under this form and a lifetime to reach perfection. I am happy with the way my students are keeping this dance form alive.” R.N. Mahapatra, chief public relations officer of Eastern Railways, was the chief guest for the evening.
There are approximately 1,000 students and six teachers in the institute. Secretary Parbati Gupta said: “Most of our students come from the suburbs. They travel for hours to learn this dance form and give it their best. They have evinced keen interest in Navanritya.” Dancers’ Guild is currently teaching two dance styles, Navanritya and Bharatanatyam. To encourage the upcoming generation to carry this dance forward the fees are kept as low as Rs 250 per month.
After the performances, snacks were given to everyone who came to celebrate Sircar’s birth anniversary.
