College Square: The College Square swimming pool, closed since last August following the death of a swimming instructor, will be reopened for swimming sessions on April 15, Poila Boisakh .

The Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) will start pumping water into the pool on Tuesday.

"The pool will be reopened on Poila Boisakh. We will start filling it with water on Tuesday," Debasish Kumar, mayoral council member in charge of parks and gardens, told Metro on Monday.

"We will issue a set of guidelines for the clubs in an attempt to prevent any untoward incident," a civic official said.

The College Square pool, maintained by the civic body, was shut down in August last year following the death of 67-year-old Kajal Dutta. The swimming instructor was feared drowned after he got stuck between rows of bamboo poles set up to support a deck under construction. The civic body later said one of the swimming clubs operating out of College Square was building the deck illegally.

The CMC had decided to drain out water from the pool after Dutta's death but pressed the pause button following requests from the College Square Durga Puja Committee. The organisers had said their illumination plan would fall flat if the pool were dry.

"The pool draws water directly from the Hooghly. The CMC and the swimming clubs together treat the water with lime and bleaching powder," said Arnab Sur, a member of the executive committee of YMCA Swimming Club.
