Calcutta: The CID on Wednesday submitted to Calcutta High Court a report on its probe into the death of a presiding officer of Raiganj, Rajkumar Roy, who was found missing on the panachayat election day on May 14 and whose body was recovered by the police the next day.

The report stated that Roy had died in a train accident and eight marks of injuries were found on the face.

After going through the report, Justice Tapabrata Chakrabarty asked the investigators to find out whether it was possible to have only marks of injuries on the face and not in other parts of the body in case of a train accident.

Justice Chakrabarty said: "Since I am not an expert, I have no idea whether it is possible to have only marks of injuries on the face and not in other parts of the body in case of a train accident. So, the investigators are directed to enlighten the court on the issue on the next date of hearing."

The court fixed the matter for hearing on Wednesday when the CID would have to give its reply to the judge's query.

Raj Kumar was a teacher at a madarsa in Karandighi block of North Dinajpur. He was assigned the duty of presiding officer at a booth in Itahar block and went missing during the polls on May 14 from the booth.

On the night of May 15, his body was found near the railway tracks on the outskirts of Raiganj town.

The incident had led to protests as a section of government employees, mostly schoolteachers, alleged that he had been murdered and his body dumped near the railway track. They also put up roadblocks and demanded a proper probe into Rajkumar's death.

The state government had handed over the investigation of the case to the CID.

The state authorities, after the recovery of the body, had claimed that Rajkumar had committed suicide.

Annada Roy, mother of Rajkumar, had moved a petition before Calcutta High Court seeking an order asking the CID to hand over the probe to the CBI.

Following the petition, Justice Chakrabarty, three weeks ago, had issued an order asking the CID to file a status report on the investigation of the case.
