The CID has said it is trying to obtain details of deceased Hemtabad MLA Debendra Nath Roy’s financial dealings with two men whose names were mentioned in the purported suicide note seized from the legislator’s body.

Niloy Singha and Mabud Ali were named in the FIR filed by Roy’s wife Chadima Roy also.

The CID had already arrested Singha from Malda. He was produced in a court in Raiganj on Wednesday and remanded in police custody for 10 days. Charges of murder have been brought against him, police sources said.

Chadima had said Singha and Ali had taken money from her husband and whenever he had asked them to repay the amounts, they would threaten him over the phone.

Sources in the CID said the sleuths had found that the MLA had provided around Rs 1 crore to the duo.

“Singha has admitted that he had taken money from the MLA. There are also reports that he, along with Ali, had planned some business. The investigators are now trying to trace Ali. Singha would be interrogated further to obtain more details,” said a source.

Singha, who was picked up from Malda, however, denied the charges. “I am not involved in the death of the MLA in any way,” he said on Tuesday, before being whisked away to Raiganj by a CID team.

Ali is from Imampur village under Motiharpur panchayat of Chanchal police station in Malda. The police found out that he had been arrested earlier in a cheating case and known in the locality as a swindler.

“Even a few years ago, Ali was a migrant worker. But his lifestyle changed recently and he bought a few two-wheelers and cars. His home is air-conditioned now. No one knows the source of Ali’s income,” said a villager.

As the investigators are gathering more details, they have also come to know that the MLA had recently sold a plot. However, the amount that he had reportedly paid to the duo, as claimed by his wife, is much higher than what he had got by selling the land.

“We suspect the duo have fleeced the MLA. Simultaneously, we need to find out how he managed to gather the additional amount that he has paid to them,” said a police officer.

The MLA had defected from the CPM to the BJP last year. The resident of Baliadighi village in Hemtabad block of North Dinajpur was found hanging in front of a shop on Monday morning.

Roy’s family members and the BJP alleged that he had been murdered and then hanged. But the state government and the CID said the post-mortem report and the preliminary investigation suggested that it was a case of suicide.
