Calcutta police on Wednesday submitted a chargesheet in connection with the alleged rape and cheating of a Japanese tourist who was befriended by a group of youths on Sudder Street last year.
The chargesheet was submitted against six of the accused under the Indian Penal Code sections related to gang rape, kidnapping, cheating, extortion, forgery, voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons and wrongful confinement and under some sections of the arms act.
The seventh accused has been declared absconding.
Three youths from the city - Shabir Khan, Wasim Khan and Sahid Iqbal, all residents of eastern Calcutta - had allegedly befriended the tourist last year and offered her help in sightseeing.
The foreigner had accompanied at least two of them to Digha, where her ATM card was allegedly snatched at gunpoint.
According to her complaint, Rs 76,000 was withdrawn from her account.
Then she was taken to Gaya where two more youths - Sajid Khan and Javed Khan - allegedly arranged for her accommodation. It was in the Bihar town that she was allegedly gang-raped.
The five youths and a sixth, named Mohammad Wasim, were arrested. The police said Wasim, who used to clean exhibits at the Indian Museum, had driven the tourist and her alleged tormentors to Digha.
The absconding accused has been identified as Chandan. He had allegedly supplied the vehicle in which the tourist was driven to Digha.
Apparently the tourist was too scared to open her mouth till she met other foreigners in Varanasi, where she mustered the courage to divulge the details of the alleged incident.
Based on her complaint with the Japanese consulate in Calcutta, the city police had started a case.
In the 82-page chargesheet submitted on Wednesday, the police have included the statements of 18 witnesses.
According to the rule, the next step in the case would be framing of charges by the court, sources said.
"Trial will start once the court frames the charges," said an officer.
An officer said the police would seek court's permission to enable the complainant to depose during the trial through video-conferencing from abroad.
On an earlier occasion, the Calcutta police have been given permission to hold online trial in a case related to the alleged rape of an Irish woman in Calcutta in 2013.
