A statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was unveiled near Manikanchan Special Economic Zone in Sector V on Saturday.

The 14ft statue is placed on a concrete platform and is located in a patch of green, measuring 126ft x 29ft, that was named Jay Hind Park.

In his address, minister Sujit Bose warned the hawkers gathered in the audience against the use of plastic sheets that can pose a fire hazard, citing the Gariahat junction blaze a year ago that had started from a pavement stall. “NDITA has provided you with kiosks. Try to maintain those,” he said.

The officials also spoke of a toilet cum cafeteria next door that was inaugurated a few days earlier. “There are at least 200 competitive examinations that take place here round the year. So a waiting area cum toilet was sorely needed for examinees and their companions,” an official said.
