A Calcutta High Court bench has directed an inquiry into alleged violence in ward number 45 on the day of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation elections last December.

The court has ordered that the inquiry be conducted under the supervision of an officer of the rank of joint commissioner of Calcutta police.

Justice Shampa Sarkar passed the order in response to a petition filed by senior Congress leader Amitabha Chakraborti.

Chakraborti’s lawyer Ravi Shankar Chatterjee said: “Hopefully, the investigation will be impartial this time and the culprits will be punished.”

He added that he would approach the court again if the investigation wasn’t done properly.

Chakraborti had sought constitutional remedy against the alleged jamming of booths, rigging and attack on Congress candidate Santosh Pathak and himself by Trinamul goons.

The police had allegedly not taken action, prompting Chakraborti to move court.
