The Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC) has started replacing expansion joints on the ramps of Vidyasagar Setu. Work is currently under way on the ramp taking off from Mandirtala, on the Howrah side.Half the width of the flank, on a 85m stretch, has been barricaded for the work. The project started about four months back and is being executed in phases."The natural life of the joints is 20-25 years. Some signs of distress were noticed, so we decided to replace the expansion joints," said Sadhan Banerjee, vice-chairman of HRBC.The expansion joints of the structure over the river were earlier replaced.Vidyasagar Setu was unveiled in October 1992.
