July 28: A centre to update Aadhaar details has recently been opened at the General Post Office (GPO). Metro prepares a guide to the facility.

Where: The room to the right of the veranda on the Reserve Bank of India pavement of the GPO

When: Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm

What can be corrected: Address, age, date of birth, spelling of name and mobile number

Documents needed: Go to uidai.gov.in and check under list of supporting documents. One has to go in person as fingerprints are needed to verify one's account. Carry your mobile phone in case you want to link it to your Aadhaar card. A one-time password (OTP) is generated during any change of detail and sent to one's mobile number. The OTP is needed to complete the update. If a mobile number is registered against one's Aadhaar number, it allows one to update details online by oneself in future.

Fee: Rs 25 per card

Time taken: Once the update is done and a physical receipt handed over, the revised card is supposed to reach one's registered address within 90 days. The change can be checked online and a printout taken after a week.

Official voice: "We have rolled out the service from the GPO last week. The service will be available at other post offices, starting with the head post offices, in future. For now, only update is happening as machines are still being procured for Aadhaar enlistment," said chief post master general, West Bengal, Arundhaty Ghosh.

To deal with lengthy queues, a third counter will be opened from next week.
