The teaser of the upcoming original Hoichoi series Anusandhan had indicated that it will be about a news reporter’s fight against a corrupt system. Starring Subhashree Ganguly as the journalist, it has generated much anticipation about the series among fans and netizens, who are excited to see her back in the OTT space after the stupendous success of her recent big banner films.

Composed of a disturbing collage of scenes featuring protagonist Anumita Sen, the investigative journalist, the trailer of the series has raised expectations about Anusandhan. It also introduces the viewer to multiple characters and situations, but in a way that manages to keep the main story under wraps and prevents the viewer from knowing who is or isn’t on Anumita’s side. The trailer, however, reveals the background of the story and tells us how Anumita learns about the crimes taking place at the Rooppur Correctional Home and is sucked into its vicious circle. How she turns from an investigator to a jail inmate who becomes pregnant like her fellow prisoners is also not explained by the trailer, adding one more layer of intrigue to an already mysterious plotline.

On the trail of a crime story that she is determined to uncover and aware of the dangers that lie ahead of her, the trailer shows Anumita unflinching in her resolve as she launches into her task with a single-minded passion and dedication, sidestepping all the obstacles in her way. As Anumita, Subhashree appears to pull off an emotionally challenging and physically demanding role to perfection. Demonstrating admirable physical strength, fitness and agility in her scenes, she also reflects her character’s honesty, courage and high ideals through her powerful and inspiring act. In the scenes that depict Anumita continuing her quest for the truth, unbothered about her own safety and in defiance of her powerful perpetrators, Subhashree effectively conveys her character’s professional commitment while underlining the harsh truth that doing what is right often comes at a personal price, an aspect of her performance that is sure to win the hearts of viewers. Aritra Dutta Banik, as her photographer associate, delivers a fine performance as a loyal sidekick who is intelligent but maintains a low profile.

Set against the horrifying scenes of custodial torture in a women’s prison is the character of Narayan Sanyal, a notorious politician played by Shaheb Chattopadhyay, as glimpsed in the teaser as well. It is broadly hinted that he is the sly mastermind running a crime racket in prison that results in female inmates becoming pregnant. However, the trailer offers no clues as to how this is brought about, adding more suspense to this gripping tale that deals with the dark and dishonourable side of those wielding positions of power. The politician’s fatalistic comments with which the trailer begins suggest that he may be a psychopath, and set the tone for the trailer, filled with scenes of shocking and inhuman violence and abuse.

Its pulsating background music with fast, powerful beats and an extraordinary crescendo echoes the mood of this high-stakes, riveting narrative being played out on screen, and intensifies a feeling of urgency, danger and dread. Also featuring Sagnik, Swagata Mukherjee and Sohini Sengupta in pivotal roles, the trailer of Anusandhan promises fast-paced action, with tense and thrilling moments expected to provide an edge-of-the-seat experience. Directed by Aditi Roy, Anusandhan will stream on Hoichoi from November 7.
