Dum Dum: Police arrested a man in Birati, North 24-Parganas, on Tuesday night in connection with a fake passport racket.

Cops seized forged documents from Basudeb Das. His name came up during interrogation of a Bangladeshi who was arrested at the airport for travelling with a fake passport, the police said.

"The Bangladeshi told us that Das had helped him get the passport," an officer of the airport police station said.

"We started gathering information about Das and traced him to his house in Birati."

A preliminary investigation revealed Das used to supply forged passports to Bangladeshis sneaking into the state.

"At least four to six men helped Das make forged passports. They are on the run," the officer said.

"Apart from dealing in fake passports, Das forged voter identity cards, and PAN and Aadhaar cards to help illegal Bangladeshi immigrants."

The investigators got to know that Das had a widespread network in areas close to the India-Bangladesh border in North 24-Parganas.

"He was in touch with touts who help Bangladeshis enter the country," another officer said.

Barasat court sent Das to four days' police custody.

"We will interrogate Das to find out details about his clientele... those who have got fake passports and other forged documents from him to prove that they are Indians," the officer said.
