College readies for Vidyasagar’s bust and statue

Metro went around the Bidhan Sarani campus to see the last-minute preparations

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate a bust and a statute of Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar at Vidyasagar College on Tuesday, almost a month after a bust of the Bengal Renaissance icon was vandalised by suspected BJP supporters. Metro went around the Bidhan Sarani campus to see the last-minute preparations

A wooden pedestal, on which Vidyasagar’s bust will be kept, being carried into a room on the ground floor of the college. The bust will be inside a glass enclosure. On May 14, intruders had smashed a similar glass enclosure before vandalising the earlier bust

The wooden pedestal placed in the room where the new bust will be kept. A team led by the chief minister will march from Hare School, on College Street, to Vidyasagar College with the bust. An official of the college said Mamata would place the bust on the pedestal herself
