Malda, Dec. 28: Two youths were killed and two injured in Sujapur today when crude bombs exploded in a plastic godown owned by a Trinamul worker, who is also a relative of the party’s local unit president.

Trinamul members alleged that some ruling party leaders in the area were running a bomb-making unit in the godown owned by Liton Sheikh, under the instructions of Trinamul’s Sujapur unit president and his relative Mafizul Sheikh.

The leaders alleged that Mafizul was making the explosives “to create tension” in the area before the Assembly polls.

Around 12pm today, residents of Danga village near Kaliachak, 15km from Malda town, heard explosions in the plastic godown off NH34.

As villagers rushed to the spot, they found four injured persons near the godown.

A portion of the tin roof of the godown had been ripped off and the walls and floor of the building were damaged.
“There were pieces of iron and iron balls, thin jute ropes and gunpowder scattered all over. We saw four persons bleeding profusely. There were four-five others who fled the spot,” a villager said. “We had no clue that people were making crude bombs in what seemed like a plastic godown,” he added.

Hannan Sheikh, 30, and Faizul Sheikh, 30, both from Danga village, died on the spot. The bodies have been sent to  Malda Medical College and Hospital for post-mortems.

Injured Nabiul Sheikh, 42, and Nasirul Islam, 40, were admitted to the medical college. Later, Nabiul was shifted to a private nursing home in Malda.

Nabiul and Nasirul, both from Danga village, are in a serious condition, sources said.

The godown has been sealed.

Saharul Biswas, the former Trinamul president of Sujapur area, alleged that the explosives were being made in the godown in association with Liton under the instructions of Mafizul.

“Mafizul was with the CPM earlier. He joined Trinamul a few months ago.

Soon, he was made the president of Trinamul in Sujapur and since then, there has been law and order problems in the area. Violence and political clashes have become common,” Biswas said.

“He (Mafizul) was making the bombs to create tension ahead of the Assembly polls. We have briefed the district Trinamul leaders on  the incident,” he added.Mafizul did not receive calls made on his mobile phone today.
Malda district Trinamul president Moazzem Hossain, however, denied the involvement of his party in today’s incident.

“Some miscreants were making crude bombs to commit some crimes. There was an explosion at the bomb making unit which has left two persons dead. Our party has no connection with it. We want the police to investigate and take appropriate action against all those involved. We never endorse any such illegal act and crime in our party,” he said.

Malda police chief Prasun Banerjee said they were looking for Liton.

“Two persons died and two have suffered injuries. We are in search of Liton Sheikh, the godown owner. Several items that are used to make bombs have been seized (from the spot) by the Kaliachak police. We are trying to find out if these people have connections with other outfits or criminals,” he said.
