Assam state coordinator for National Register of Citizens (NRC) Prateek Hajela has asked the district registrars of citizen registration to make adequate arrangements to help people inspect the draft NRC and file objections at district headquarters in addition to NRC seva kendras, following the Supreme Court’s order on Wednesday.

In a letter on Thursday, Hajela asked the DRCRs to make available the draft NRC for display at the office of the SDO (civil) in addition to the offices of deputy commissioners, circle officers and gram panchayats to help people inspect them before filing claims and objections and provide other arrangements.

“Such arrangements include printing of copies, making seating arrangements for inspection, training of staff for searching draft NRC etc,” the letter said.

Hajela asked the DRCRs to receive the objections at the offices of deputy commissioners if required, giving manual receipt as the system for issuing computerised receipts was not yet ready.

“Insofar receiving objections are concerned, you will have to designate officers and support staff by issuing an office order to receive objections at DC offices. A computerized system for receipt of objections is being put in place at DC offices similar to the NRC seva kendras. Till such system is put in place, you will have to hand over manual receipt of objections,” said the letter.

Hajela asked the DRCRs to hold “adequate” publicity at the local level about the “major” changes based on the court order.

The Supreme Court has extended the last date of receiving claims and objection to December 31. It said List B documents (a list of admissible documents for inclusion of one’s name in the NRC) would be valid regardless of date of their issuance, allowing people to file objections at offices of the deputy commissioners in addition to the NRC seva kendras.
