The Coordination Committee Against Citizenship Amendment Act has demanded immediate suspension of Baksa foreigners tribunal member Kamalesh Kr Gupta for making communal statements against one community in a recent letter to Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while donating an amount towards Assam Arogya Nidhi for use in fight against coronavirus.

The anti-CAA organisation, headed by intellectual Hiren Gohain, on Sunday submitted a memorandum to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, alleging that the act of Gupta was in gross violation of WHO as well as the Centre’s directives not to communalise the fight against coronavirus and thus, the state government itself should have initiated action against him.

In the letter, Gupta requested the health minister not to utilise the fund for treatment of patients from a particular community. Names of some other FT members and employees of FTs in Baksa, Silchar, Morigaon and Barpeta were also there as donors in the list Gupta furnished. “We believe that people involved in judiciary, media, medical professions and security personnel act without any communal feelings. But, if an FT member can be so communally prejudiced, it would influence his judgement as well … Therefore, K.K. Gupta should be immediately suspended and an inquiry instituted against him,” the memorandum reads.

The memorandum from the anti-CAA group also alleged that Gupta has indirectly moved the minister for a salary hike which is another violation of protocol of a government official.

The All Assam Minorities Students’ Union has also lodged a complaint against Gupta on the same issue at Mushalpur police station recently.
