Jamshedpur, April 23: A complete collapse of two leading mobile networks in the city for over 24 hours saw subscribers facing a harrowing time.

While lines of Reliance Telecom developed snags on Tuesday evening, BSNL lines began facing severe complications since early this morning.

Officials at Reliance, requesting anonymity, today said: “A major fault occurred last afternoon when the optical fibre cable along National Highway 33 got severely damaged. That led to a complete collapse in the mobile network connectivity in the city and its adjoining areas.”

“Engineers from both Jamshedpur and Ranchi were later pressed into service to rectify the fault, but till late this evening, partial services were restored, but majority of the mobile numbers remained out of reach. It is a serious problem and our engineers are trying their best to solve it. In all possibility, we would be able to restore normal services by late tonight,” said officials.

The business community in the steel city has, however, decided to stage a massive protest at the Reliance Telecom office at Golmuri tomorrow if the connectivity is not properly restored.

“We are having a tough time since yesterday. Moreover, the Reliance network gives us trouble almost on a regular basis. Our business has been hampered tremendously. So we have decided to stage a mass protest tomorrow,” said S.N. Thakur, the president, Adityapur Small Industries Association.

BSNL services were affected through the day after a technical snag developed in the server at Bhagalpur early this morning. “The server at Bhagalpur covers the entire Jharkhand range. So network connectivity problems cropped up all over and it took our engineers over three-and-a-half hours to repair the breakdown and restore the services,” said Sunil Prasad, deputy general manager (mobile), BSNL, Jamshedpur. “Broadband connection is a must for our job, but we had to face a tough time due to the network failure,” said a businessman. Operations in ATMs across the city were sluggish through the day.
