Calcutta: Jaydev Unadkat is eyeing an India comeback.
Fitter and stronger, the left-arm pacer has picked up 11 wickets in his three matches in the Ranji Trophy this season, including a six-wicket haul against Assam at the Eden on Monday.
The Saurashtra pacer is aiming to fill in the void left by Zaheer Khan.
"Zaheer bhai had been the spearhead of the Indian bowling for a long period. To fill in his boots is one of the challenges I set for myself.
"Definitely, it's one of my goals... To be one of the left-arm pacers in the Indian bowling armoury," Unadkat said.
Unadkat said he's working on his back-foot landing to a add an extra yard of pace. "I'm trying to keep it more stable. It was collapsing a bit.
"The whole action plays a part in the back-foot landing. You tend to put in more body force and get good momentum if the landing is good, which goes away if your back foot collapses a bit.
"I'm trying to correct that and get an angle. It also reduces the stress on my back," he explained.
Having made a Test debut as a 19-year-old when Zaheer strained his hamstring for the first Test in South Africa back in December 2010-11, Unadkat has struggled to meet expectations. "It's an advantage I would say. If a couple of pacers are doing well and one of them is a left-arm pacer, the captain would really love to have him in his armoury. We also help the spinners. We can create spots on the wicket..."
