Calcutta: Diptayan Ghosh earned his third and final Grandmaster norm, when he played out a draw with compatriot Swapnil Dhopade in the last round of the 6th HD Bank Cup International Open, in Ho Chi Minh City, on Sunday.
Diptayan, a product of The Telegraph Schools' Chess Championship, remained undefeated in the nine-round event, scoring six points. The strongest tournament in South East Asia was won by the top-seeded GM Wang Hao from China.
The city boy, a student of South Point School, got his first GM norm in Dubai in 2013. The second came in Pardubice (Czech Republic), in 2015.
Having earned the third norm, Diptayan expressed his happiness: "I am very happy. I tried very hard to complete the third and final GM norm".
He will return to the city on Monday night. Diptayan's father Sandip said: "We are very proud for him."
He will be the youngest GM from Bengal.
The world chess federation (Fide) will ratify the results and declare him as a GM after completing the formalities.
