Calcutta, July 23 :
Red tapism and government apathy are nothing new in Bengal, but what the soccer fans of the city are being made to go through can only be termed as callous and ridiculous.
Ever since the galleries at the Mohammedan Sporting ground collapsed last year, the simple past time of watching their favourite teams in action have been denied to the football fans of the city.
For the second time, they had to return disappointed from the Maidan today, when they were turned away by the police at the Mohun Bagan ground, where the home team was in action against BNR. This after the Home Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya had assured that entry of 2,600 fans, to the public galleries of all three enclosed grounds will be allowed.
But today, when they turned up, they were unceremoniously chased away by the mounted police. Most of them, however, were too eager to watch the game and thronged the rampart. They remained standing there, braving the heavy downpour, and then witnessing the abandonment of the match.
But the powers to be seem unaffected by their plight. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Headquarters, Nazrul Islam, said that the clearance from the PWD reached him late in the afternoon, after which he could not get in touch with the sports department.
The IFA joint secretary Ranjit Gupta said that he had no idea why tickets were not sold today, despite assurance from the home minister, the police and the PWD. They had met only on Wednesday.
This was the second time Mohun Bagan supporters were let down. On July 10, despite assurance from Islam that tickets will be sold and spectators allowed to sit upto the 10th row of the public galleries, they could not see the match against George Telegraph.
Anjan Mitra, Mohun Bagan secretary, said that this kind of harassment of fans should stop. He alleged that the government departments were just passing the buck.
