Calcutta: Sergeant Pepper, trainer Bharath Singh’s new acquisition, from western India, made a winning debut, on the local track, as the 16-10 favourite had the measure of Raffles in the 1,800m Stoney Valley Handicap, the feature event in Wednesday’s race card. The four-year-old horse made his own pace and yet scored with ease.

Luck, however, eluded Bharath and his jockey in rest of the card. Two of the trainer’s fancied runners — Cerise and Torch Of Life — narrowly failed to beat favourites Follow The Dream and Destiny in their respective events — the 1,100m Alvarada Handicap and the 1,200m Quincy Handicap. It was an afternoon of close finishes. Errol Bhungard’s Declared Asset beat Sreenidhi by a short-neck to win the Ethics Handicap while Farley Rodrigues’ Happy Kingdom had the measure of Requite, by a nose, in the Immaculate Handicap.
