Seeds live up to billing Saurav star attraction Corporate football

lThe top seeds of the men’s singles played to form in the semi-finals of the Aarbur Calcutta hardcourt tennis championships at South Club on Wednesday.

Top seed Abhishek Jagnani, second seed Vinod Kumar Sewa, third seed Manoj Kumar Sewa all won. In the day’s only upset, Danielle Jones ousted fourth seed Treta Bhattacharya 6-0, 6-2 in the ladies section.

RESULTS (QUARTER FINALS):

Men’s singles — Abhishek Jagnani (1) bt Bhagirath Kumar 6-1, 6-1; Manoj Kumar Sewa (3) bt Satirth Patnaik 6-0, 6-0; Dhruv Kumar (4) bt Robin Das 6-3, 6-2; Vinod Kumar Sewa (2) bt Samrat Ghosh 6-0, 7-5. Ladies’ singles — Priyanka Parekh (1) w/o Pooja Mitra; Danielle Jones bt Treta Bhattacharya (4) 6-0, 6-2; Ragini Vimal (2) bt Anasuya Koley 6-0, 6-0. Men’s doubles — Vinod Kumar Sewa & Saurav Sukul (1) bt Samrat Ghosh & Gora Mukherjee 6-0, 6-2; Manoj Kumar Sewa & Robin Das (3) bt Ajay K. Nishank & Satirth Patnaik 6-1, 6-2.

l City boy Saurav Ghosal is the star attraction in the Indian junior squash open, being held in Pune. Saurav is currently the under-17 world No. 1 and has recently won the German Junior Open. Apart from him, under-19 national champion Gaurav Nandrajog and Deepika Pallikal, who won the German Junior Open in nuder-13 category, are also participating , along with 131 others from India, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong.

l Hyatt Calcutta emerged champions in the five-city Kingfisher corporate football tournament, held in the last weekend in Bangalore. Hyatt Calcutta beat Delhi’s GE Capital 5-1 in the final.

FOOTBALL: IFA Shield semi-final — Mohun Bagan vs Tollygunge Agragami — at Salt Lake Stadium, 5.45 pm.

TENNIS: Calcutta hardcourt meet at South Club from 3 pm.
