Calcutta, Sept. 19 :    Calcutta, Sept. 19:  On an eventful day, Debayan Majumdar of St James' School caused a flutter by upsetting fifth seed, Rohan Vijay Shandilya of D.B.M.S. Career Academy, Jamshedpur in the fourth round of The Telegraph Schools' Chess Championship at Alekhine Chess Club, today. Debayan, playing Black, opted for his favourite French defence and obtained a clearly superior position from the opening. Debayan allowed his opponent counterplay on the Kingside in the middlegame after which the game was heading for a draw. Shandilya, lost on time in a clearly drawn ending as he failed to claim a draw in the endgame. On the top board Mary Ann Gomes of Loreto Day School, Sealdah gave a few anxious moments to second seed, Somak Palit of Mitra Institution as she had a clearly better position in the Reversed Dutch Leningrad defence. But Mary lost a pawn and let Somak off the hook in the endgame after which Somak carefully nursed his extra pawn to victory. Suman Basu of Madhyamgram High School went down to fourth seed, Abhishek Das of Bharat Sevashram School, Jamshedpur in 23 moves in the Petroff defence. Supriya Maji of B.A.P.L.S Vidyapith upset the winner of the Bhubaneswar leg of the meet, Nishkanka Mishra of B J English Medium School in a Caro- Kann defence. Supriya won three pieces for her Queen on the 18th move and then went on to win the game in 29 moves. Samput Mallick of Holy Home beat Sashank Singh of Nichols High School, Guwahati in 31 moves in the Tarrasch variation of the French defence. Another Guwahati boy, Nandan Buragohain (3), playing black, beat Sourav Biswas (2). Ritam Bhowmick of Modern English Academy got the better of Soumya Thakurtha of St James High School in 33 moves in a Vienna Opening. Chiranjit Saha of Umakanta Academy, Agartala overcame the challenge of Sambhabi Pattanaik of Blessed Sacrament High School, Puri in a Centre Counter Opening in 50 moves. In a game between 11-year-old Ritam Chatterjee of Julien Day School and 6 year-old Rishi Raj Sarkar of Hind Motor Education Centre, the youngsters showed great resilience and patience to carry on the game till the 67 move, after which Rishi Raj resigned.
