“Today despite our best efforts his clinical condition has deteriorated and he is failing to respond adequately to the treatment.

“Team of treating doctors briefed the family about his condition,” a statement from Medica Superspeciality Hospital said.

Later Dr Kunal Sarkar said: “We are still trying our best. His condition worsened in the evening and is in critical condition.

“But he is still with us. The state government, his family and hospital are working together,” he said.

Banerjee was put on ventilator recently and his condition was said to be critical. Banerjee is being treated by a panel of specialists.

The 83-year-old had previously been admitted to the hospital in January for electrolyte imbalance, renal problem, Parkinson’s disease and dementia. He had subsequently been discharged on January 23.

The Olympian represented India at the quadrennial event twice, in the 1956 and 1960 editions.

Banerjee also had a gold medal from the 1962 Asian Games to his name.
