Brisbane: It was a day of records at the first Ashes Test on Saturday. While Australian captain Ricky Ponting took his Test average to the peak among current players, an attendance record was set at the Gabba. Following are the details:
The prolific Ponting, who was unbeaten on 51 at stumps on Saturday, overtook Rahul Dravid’s average to emerge as the world’s top batsman. Ponting, who smashed 196 in the first innings, now has a career average of 59.13. Dravid is No. 2 with at 58.75, while Tendulkar’s is 55.39. In the all-time list, Ponting has moved up from seventh to third spot and is behind Don Bradman (99.94) and Herbert Sutcliffe (60.73).
Cricket Australia announced that 117,322 fans had streamed into the Gabba stadium over the first three days, smashing the previous Brisbane record of 93,143 in 1933. The old record, achieved during the controversial Bodyline series, was set over six days.
