Gurgaon: Aiming to cement the fifth spot, Mohun Bagan will be without some of their key players when they take on Indian Arrows in their last I-League match on Sunday.
“I am struggling to finalise my starting eleven,” said Mohun Bagan technical director Subhas Bhowmick on Saturday. “We are already without Snehasish Chakrabarty and Jayanta Sen because of injuries. Now (Edeh) Chidi is also complaining of hamstring problem,” he added.
In case, Chidi is declared unfit, the green and maroon side would take the field with Asim Biswas pairing up with Subair Murithala Ali in the upfront. Bhowmick said he was looking for a win to cement the fifth place. While Mohun Bagan have 34 points from 25 matches, the Indians Arrows are at the 10th spot with 26 points.
“Under the present scenario, a fifth place finish won’t be a too much of a disappointment,” said Bhowmick. “When I took over the reins of the team, they were at the 13th place. Thereafter, I think I did a good job,” claimed the coach, who, according to Mohun Bagan sources, is unlikely to be retained for the next season.
Bhowmick is wary of the Gurgaon heat and Tau Devi Lal Stadium’s poor ground condition. While the state of the turf has been denounced by every participating team so far, the match has been scheduled under blazing sun at 4.30pm.
Not that everything is fine with Indian Arrows. Touted as a developmental side at the start of the season, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) are now on the verge of disbanding the team because of financial crisis.
There are also plans to shift the team’s base to Calcutta from Gurgaon next season. The AIFF is currently in talk with a Calcutta based company, who have offered free accommodation and playing facilities to the team. Sources said the company could also share the players’ payments with the federation.
