Calcutta: The 3-0 scoreline against Japan might well suggest Brazil’s cracking start to their Confederations Cup campaign, but they still have a long way to go and need to work out on certain areas of their game, feels Marcos Falopa.
The newly appointed East Bengal coach said others too should deliver instead of leaving striker Neymar with too much work to do.
“The win against Japan has only been a start for Brazil. Without doubt, most of them did a good job in that match. That said, others too should step up and make sure the team don’t rely solely on Neymar,” Falopa told The Telegraph from Sao Paulo on Tuesday.
“Neymar is extremely skilful. I’m not saying that all others in the team should have a similar amount of skill. But they can at least make sure to lift their performances and come near Neymar.
“Otherwise, the balance in the side could be affected. I also feel there are some areas where the team need to work on. It’s imperative the players concentrate on not losing their grip on the game, something that could prove costly against Mexico.
“Italy, too, are a formidable outfit. And then there’s Spain, who are ruling the game at present… Brazil, thus, have their task cut out,” the 64-year-old added.
Falopa is also closely connected to Neymar’s family, having coached his father Neymar da Silva Sr. at Uniao de Mogi FC. “I used to observe Neymar’s knack in football since his days as a kid.
“I always had this feeling the guy could make it big in future. And today, he’s one of the most significant parts of this Brazilian side, though I feel he still needs to improve.
“It’s too early to compare him with someone like Lionel Messi. Now, if Neymar keeps on working hard and fine-tunes his skills, he can certainly match Messi,” he elaborated.
