Calcutta: Mohammedan Sporting defeated West Bengal Police 2-1 in a CFL Premier Division A match at their home ground on Tuesday.

Princewill Emeka, who was also adjudged Man of the Match, netted a brace while Sheikh Shamim reduced the margin for West Bengal Police.

Mohammedan Sporting had lost to Peerless in their last match and may be that's the reason around 2000 spectators turned up.

Going into match, Nandi made the only change to the squad handing first start to winger Sumit Das at the expense of Rahul KP.

Mohammedan Sporting shot into the lead early in the sixth minute. Bazie Armand got a loose ball inside the rival territory. A rival defender went for a tackle, but with the ground conditions being heavy, the ball went to an unmarked Emeka.

He made no mistake in slotting it home past a diving Soumava Ghosh, the rival goalkeeper. The second goal came in the 38th minute.

Bazie was once again in the thick of things. He was brought down inside the penalty box and referee Pratik Mondal had no hesitation in pointing to the dreaded spot.

Emeke then scored his second, converting the penalty without much ado.

In the 68th minute, substitute Shamim reduced the margin when he found the target from a goalmouth melee.

Mohammedan Sporting had some more chances to convert, though. Emeka was once guilty of placing the ball wide with only the goalie to beat.

Dipendu Dowary too had only Ghosh to beat after Bazie beautifully slipped one through. But Dowary lobbed it wide. Mohammedan Sporting started the second half just how they did in the first and continued to pile on more pressure on West Bengal Police. But their attackers' especially' Emeka' Sumit Das and Dipendu, failed to convert.

"I have been saying that Emeka is a good player. Today, he proved me right. I hope he scores against East Bengal as well," Mohammedan Sporting technical director Raghu Nandy said.

Mohammedan Sporting now have 13 points from seven outings. While Mohammedan Sporting have pretty much fallen away from the CFL title race, they are yet to play their two most important matches of their campaign - against East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.

The Big Two, who played out a 2-2 draw on Sunday, would like to beat Mohammedan Sporting by big margins. And that may decide 2018 CFL Premier Division winners. "We will beat East Bengal on Sunday. And I am confident I would score," Emeka said.
