Calcutta: Devang Gandhi has been named chairman of the state senior selection committee. The decision was taken at a working committee meeting of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) on Wednesday.
Devang's colleagues on the selection committee will be Sambaran Banerjee, Arup Bhattacharya and Madan Ghosh. Devang, Arup and Madan are new inclusions to the committee. They come in place of Raju Mukherjee, IB Roy and Alok Bhattacharjee.
Devang's choice as chief selector, however, hasn't gone down well with Sambaran. The former Bengal captain had chaired selection committee meetings after Raju's resignation and was apparently promised the post by the powers that be.
Sambaran didn't hide his feelings late in the evening. "I'm very upset and surprised... I don't think I deserve this type of treatment. I feel humiliated... I won't say anything more now," said Sambaran.
There's a strong possibility that Sambaran might put in his papers. CAB president Sourav Ganguly didn't find anything wrong with the move to have Devang as chairman. "Devang has played Tests and ODIs... He is experienced... Moreover, Sambaran and Arup have been the chairman of the selection committee in the past. Everyone should get a chance," said the former India captain.
A "pleasantly surprised" Devang said: "I'm happy and at the same time aware that this is a big responsibility. I haven't spoken to Sourav at length, but will do so soon."
The former India opener stressed on bench strength. "I'm looking forward to working as a unit. We'll have Sourav to help us with his experience, and that's a big positive."
Meanwhile, the junior selection committee will have Udaybhanu Banerjee as chairman and includes Anup Das, Subir Dey and Shiv Sagar Singh. The women's selection committee will be headed by Mithu Mukherjee and comprises Lopamudra Banerjee, Keya Roy and Chaitali Basak.
