Superstars in a team are always a boon as they motivate the rest of the players. But it doesn’t work if you have 11 superstars in a team since a right balance is required, feels Anil Kumble.

Speaking at a webinar on Saturday, the former India Test captain and head coach said: “You do need superstars in a side because that’s how you motivate the other players. Besides, superstars are one of the reasons why the game is followed.

“But having 11 superstars in a team isn’t going to work. We have seen many matches where a World XI featuring only superstars have lost to a national team. The superstars weren’t able to gel. So you need a combination of very talented and very hardworking players.

“Also, it’s not about chest pumping and being aggressive all the time. In some situations, you need to show respect to the opposition. So in a team, you also need those players who understand these aspects.”

Kumble had a piece of advice for Under-19 cricketers too.

“Don’t worry about selection, for it leads to mental issues. Concentrate on what you can do and don’t worry about the uncontrollable.

“When you think how you can do well and help your team win, that’s when you shine. The selector then can’t ignore you,” he said.
