Calcutta: Aloke Mukherjee resigned from the Mohammedan Sporting coach’s post after the team was thrashed 1-6 by East Bengal on Saturday’s CFL Premier Division Super Nine tie, at the Salt Lake Stadium.

It was a change of mind in a matter of few hours for Mukherjee, who at the end of the game, had categorically mentioned that he would not run away and dump the team because of this embarrassing loss.

“I’m not a coward that I’ll run away,” he had said.

However, Mukherjee opted to quit and sent a fax message in this regard to Mohammedan Sporting president Sultan Ahmed, late in the evening. Earlier, senior officials Iqbal Ahmed and Mohammed Qamaruddin had decided to resign in the wake of Saturday’s result, but backtracked after Mukherjee resigned.

“I admit having said at the end of the match that I won’t run away. But circumstances are different now. So on learning that the respective officials have decided to quit, I made up my mind to do the same as well since I too am responsible for all what took place,” Mukherjee said.
