Calcutta: Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has been named in the India A squad for the upcoming four-day games against South Africa A, the BCCI announced after the senior selection committee meeting here on Monday.
Chahal has not played any first-class cricket since December 2016. But his inclusion in the four-day matches does hint that the Indian team management has Chahal in mind for the longest format.
Sanju Samson returned to the India A squad for the quadrangular series that features South Africa A and Australia A as well, after missing the tour of England because of fitness concerns.
Shreyas Iyer will also lead India A in the quadrangular series that follows, with Manish Pandey named captain of India B. Bengal's Abhimanyu Easwaran will also be part of the four-day matches.
Meanwhile, in Duleep Trophy, Abhishek Raman, Writtick Chatterjee, Ishan Porel, Sudip Chatterjee and Ashok Dinda are the five Bengal players to be taking part. Raman will play for India Blue, to be captained by Faiz Fazal, Writtick and Porel are included in the Abhinav Mukund-led India Red, while Sudip and Dinda are part of the India Green squad that will be led by Parthiv Patel.
Punjab wicketkeeper-batsman Abhishek Gupta was also named in the India Red squad, despite the fact that he was serving a doping ban till September 14. However, late in the evening, the BCCI announced Akshay Wadkar as replacement for Gupta.
