Calcutta: In order to ensure that Bengal excel in Ranji Trophy, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is set to introduce a new tournament, to be called the Super League.
Eight teams will take part in this competition with rules similar to that of the Ranji Trophy.
The rules and regulations will be finalised in Tuesday's tournament committee meeting.
"In tomorrow's meeting, the rules of this Super League will be framed, along with finalising some other decisions," CAB tournament committee chairman, Subroto Sarkar, said on Monday.
"The best eight teams of the first division league will participate in this competition.
"The top sides - either first two or three - from each of the three first division groups will be the participating teams.
"The rules are most likely to be set in the Ranji Trophy mould.
"For instance, if a team takes a first-innings lead, it will gain three points. An outright win, on the other hand, will fetch six points.
"The whole idea is to make club cricket more and more competitive, besides making sure that the Bengal team features among the top ones at the national level," Sarkar added.
The Super League could well go on to be the season opener for club cricket.
"The season generally begins from October.
"Now, we need to work certain things out to see if this could be the first competitive event of the season," Sarkar said.
