New Delhi: New Zealand pace bowler Trent Boult, on Wednesday, said their batsmen would have to do better in order to challenge India in the ongoing ODI series.
"As a unit, we are looking to get more runs. If we get more runs on the board, we can put more pressure on a good Indian side.
"I am not going to single anyone out in terms of performance, but they should contribute with the bat and also bowl and field. Try and put in more energy. We need to buck up fast," he said on the eve of the second one-dayer at the Kotla on Thursday.
In the first ODI at Dharamsala, New Zealand were all out for 190 leaving India to score the required runs with the loss of only four wickets in 33.1 overs.
Boult did not play the first ODI and said he was not sure whether he would play the second. "I am available for selection," said the New Zealand bowler. "There are still four matches up for grabs. An opportunity (is there) for us to right a few wrongs and put in a good performance," he said.
Asked to compare between the former captain Brendon McCullum and the current leader, Kane Williamson, the New Zealand bowler said the present skipper is a classy batsman.
"Kane is a classy player and has been ranked as a top batsman for a reason. In a way, he has had a pretty tough time walking into the role of captaincy. It has been a learning experience for the whole team to be honest.
"The way Brendon led the team, I don't think anyone could do it as well as he did it. He set his own tone, we all know what kind of explosive batsman he is. But we are stacked up with lot of quality players in the side and we need all of them to stand up and put in good performance," Boult said.
"It's been a tough learning experience in the Test series and in the defeat in Dharamsala, the other night. The mood in the camp is positive and the guys are looking forward to the challenge."
