Bad day for all of us, says captain Kohli

Calcutta: Reaching the landmark of 10,000 runs in ODIs is always special. But for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the occasion turned out to be a bit sour as he struggled to get going, with England thrashing India by 86 runs in the second ODI at Lord's to level the series.

Dhoni faced as many as 59 balls to get to 37 as India gradually fazed out in their chase. However, captain Virat Kohli continued to back Dhoni, being right behind the former skipper. "This thing comes up whenever MS isn't able to play the way he wants to. People just wait to jump onto him. When it works, they call him the best finisher and if it doesn't, they jump onto him.

"It was a bad day for all of us, not just him. He is experienced and the idea was to take it deep. You don't want to lose by 150-160 runs," Kohli said at the post-match presentation.

The India captain, however, remains confident of his team bouncing back in the third and final ODI on Tuesday. "Yes, the series is really well poised.

"Even after the defeat (in the T20I) in Cardiff, we remained calm and bounced back. In fact, we expected a team like England to bounce back," Kohli said.

Analysing where it all went wrong for India in this game, Kohli added: "We started pretty well with the bat. It was a good wicket, which got slower. But when we lost three wickets in three overs, that really hurt us. I thought that's where we fell behind."

"Credit to the bowlers, for they stuck to their plans.

"We always want to test the character of the new guys. We expect these guys to do the job. It's a great thing to test our new guys and it's important to see how they bounce back. Today was a day when we just couldn't get going," he said.
