Calcutta: Mohinder ‘Jimmy’ Amarnath’s colleagues in the senior selection committee have been “very impressed” with the debutant.
Mohinder’s debut as a selector was during the September 23 meeting in Mumbai, where the Rest of India squad was picked, but his first involvement with an India selection was in Chennai, on Thursday.
Now 61, Mohinder played 69 Tests and 85 ODIs between December 1969 and October 1989.
“That Mohinder knows so much comes through when he makes a point... We all know what an outstanding player he was... That’s his asset... He’s open-minded and there’s no bias... No pre-conceived notions,” one of his colleagues told The Telegraph.
According to another colleague, Mohinder has made it pretty clear that “attitude” matters the most to him and that performances in domestic cricket “must” be rewarded.
Mohinder’s colleagues don’t have an issue there.
One of Mohinder’s colleagues added: “He’s very thorough and favours a much wider discussion when options are debated... Basically, he doesn’t want somebody deserving to not be part of the discussion.”
Mohinder is going to be the chairman from 2012-13, when Krishnamachari Srikkanth’s four-year tenure ends. Narendra Hirwani, Surendra Bhave and Raja Venkat will also be finishing next September.
