An important development that’s slowly unfolding involves Instagram bringing back chronological feed, which the platform’s head Adam Mosseri talked about during his recent appearance at the US Senate hearing. He said that the company is testing out two versions of the feature and that it’s “targeting early next year” as a release window.

“We believe in more transparency and accountability and we believe in more control. That’s why we’re currently working on a version of a chronological feed that we hope to launch next year,” said Mosseri.

One version of the chronological feed will allow you to “pick your favourites and they show up at the top in chronological order” while the other would let you see posts from everyone you’re following in chronological order but it’s unclear how recommended posts will get interspersed.

He said that Instagram has been for a few years experimenting with different ways to offer users more control over their experience. “I wish I had a specific month to tell you right now, but right now we’re targeting the first quarter of next year,” Mosseri said.

Instagram moved to an algorithmic feed in 2016 and the decision didn’t go down well with users. He has also made it clear that the company won’t ditch its algorithmic feed to revert back to one that’s in order. The Instagram Comms Twitter handle has tweeted: “We want to be clear that we’re creating new options — providing people with more choices so they can decide what works best for them — not switching everyone back to a chronological feed.”
