Kokrajhar, Nov. 11: In another case of alleged witch-hunting, a 35-year-old housewife was killed with sharp weapons in Kokrajhar district late last evening.
The victim, a mother of two. was identified as Hirimba Basumatary, resident of Goramari under Dotma police station.
Police said three goons, allegedly hired by the victim's sisters-in-law,# attacked her with sharp weapons killing her on the spot. Police suspect family feud to be the motive behind the murder.
The victim's husband, Chakrasingh Basumatary, said his wife was fetching water from a well adjacent to the house when three youths attacked her with sharp weapons. "Hearing her cry, I rushed to the spot and tried to rescue her. I even lobbed a brick at them but one of them aimed a pistol at me."
Neighbours immediately rushed to the spot and chased the fleeing attackers. They managed to catch one, identified as Runu Narzary, 28, who was later handed over to the police. The other two, Fwrman Narzary and Jakhong Basumatary, both in their late 20s, managed to flee.
Runu# confessed to have carried out the attack with two others. He said they were hired by Chakrasingh's sisters, Sabita Basumatary and Nita Basumatary, to kill Hirimba, accusing her of being a witch.
Sabita is a Hindi teacher at Karigaon ME School in Kokrajhar. She is absconding.
Nita was present during the attack but went missing soon after.
An FIR has been lodged with the police.
Officer-in-charge of Dotma police station Gagan Chandra Das said they have started investigations.
"One of the attackers has been arrested. We hope to arrest the others soon," he said.
Chakrasingh demanded immediate arrest of the culprits, including his sisters.
The body was sent for post-mortem.
